Digital Engagement Specialist
Born and raised in Denver, Makia is an expert in strategic planning, community building, and advocacy. Makia was first introduced into the nonprofit world during her work with Smart Girl, Inc., an adolescent leadership program in Denver. During her undergraduate career at the University of Denver, she studied Public Policy and Gender & Women’s Studies and was a leader in campus wide initiatives to promote diversity and inclusivity as more than buzz words. Makia has organized rallies, written campus wide-strategic plans, and led workshops on anti-racism and accessible event planning.
Makia got her introduction into Colorado State politics as a lobbying intern for Brandeberry McKenna Public Affairs where she did policy research and bill tracking. Before joining the Progressive Promotions team, Makia was a part of the inaugural cohort of the Smithsonian Women’s History Initiative Because of Herstory program. She developed digital strategy and programming for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture to be launched in Women’s History Month 2020. While there, Makia developed a love for creating accessible digital resources and storytelling within the African American community.
